Suppressing Black Military Heroism: An American Tradition

Jacqueline’s heroism being classified and suppressed by the military reflects a documented American tradition: Black servicemembers who performed extraordinary acts of valor being denied the recognition given to white counterparts. The novel draws direct inspiration from Doris Miller: a Black cook who manned an anti-aircraft gun and saved multiple lives during the attack on Pearl Harbor, was nominated for the Medal of Honor, but received only the Navy Cross. His full story was not widely acknowledged for decades. Furthermore, inspiration is drawn from the policies of Pete Hegseth, who has actively suppressed public acknowledgements of Black military heroes and Black officer promotions

General Takahashi’s “Never Trump” Moment

General Daisuke Takahashi’s alliance with Vice President Caleb Hughes was inspired by the collapse of the Never Trump movement, in which prominent Republicans—who spent years opposing Donald Trump’s candidacy for president in 2016–bent over backwards to bend-the-knee to the MAGA movement after it became clear Trump would not only win the White House on the back of a cult-like following unprecedented in American politics. Politicians submitted themselves to numerous humiliation rituals to abandon their opposition of President Trump in hopes of gaining the support of his MAGA followers.

Institutional Retaliation Against Celebrities Who Spoke Out

The systematic, coordinated destruction of Jacqueline’s career after she publicly exposes Ethan and Donatello (the same destruction that compelled First Lady Amina McDonald to remain silent following her sexual assault) reflects a pattern documented across industries for decades: the playbook used against women who spoke out against powerful men in entertainment, media, politics, and business. Anonymous source campaigns, planted mental illness narratives, and industry-wide blacklisting are all documented tactics.

First Lady Amina McDonald’s fictional and dramatic detailing of bring pressured, raped, and silenced by Hollywood executives at an Ethan Graves party illustrates the real, industrywide, issues made infamous by Harvey Weinstein. This was an especially important illustration of the dichotomy sexual harassment creates in high-end industries: if you call it out (like Jacqueline Price), you lose everything; however, silence also comes with the price of a gilded coffin of guilt.

Women Secretly Attached to Special Operations Units

The military listed Jacqueline Price’s job as a driver but deployed her in classified combat and intelligence operations. This is based on the documented history of the U.S. military secretly attaching (but not officially assigned) women to male-only special operations units during the War on Terror, years before it was legal. As depicted in the novel, it was culturally taboo for male soldiers to interact with Afghan women and children; however, women could bypass this barrier. The novel presents Jacqueline as a fictional pioneer of these real, classified programs.
